I was a rare fan of the original OAE1, but the new Grell OAE2 is a different beast entirely. In this review, I dive deep into why Axel Grell’s latest creation is a massive leap forward for audiophile headphones. The unique forward-mounted driver design aims to replicate the experience of listening to high-end speakers, and the results are some of the best imaging and soundstage depth I’ve heard under $2,000.

I compare the OAE2 against heavy hitters like the Meze 105 SILVA, HiFiMan Ananda Unveiled, and the Fosi Audio i5 to see how it stacks up in tonality, timbre, and resolution. While there are minor quirks with the 2.5mm cable connectors and headband pressure for fellow bald listeners, the sonic performance makes them easy to recommend.
